If you have chosen Ambergris Caye as your next holiday destination because you just want to relax by the serene freshwater pool of your luxurious hotel or keep swinging in a hammock reading a book and sipping a drink or enjoy the colorful sky at the time of sunset, remember that Ambergris Caye is full of activities you might not be knowing before. If you want to just calm down, you can do that here, but if by any chance you feel like getting more active, you need not be disappointed for choosing a non-happening destination. Here are exciting things you can do in Ambergris Caye.
1. Bacalar Chico
A longish trip on the northern Ambergris Caye, Bacalar Chico is at a little more than an hour distance but offers frequent stops at interesting places during the journey that make the trip worthwhile. Bacalar Chico is located within the Belize reef Reserve System World Heritage Site created in 1996. On the way, you can find amazing snorkeling spots and also Cayo Iguanu, a nature reserve that is a nesting area for the roseate spoonbill and red-brown egret. You also come across some small Maya pyramids at San Juan ranger station.
2. Diving and Snorkeling
Ambergris Caye may not be the first choice for scuba diving enthusiasts as there are more sites for that like Light House Reef, Blue Hole and Turneffe Island. However, Ambergris Caye provides easy access to quite a few interesting diving spots, such as Palmeros Point which is 12 mile north from the island. Beginning off at 50 feet, the reef then meanders through some tiny canyons and then drops gently of 110 feet. This is considered to be a great dive spot near Ambergris Caye and fantastic for marine photography.
Ambergris Caye has many other dive spots around it including Love Tunnel, aptly named so, because it’s a popular underwater wedding destination. Divers can go up from a canyon and glide towards a cavern having an opening in its roof from which sunlight enters in. This drift drive goes up to 80 feet down the water. Other interesting dive spots include Eagle Ray Canyon, Cypress Garden and Angle Flats.
3. Nightlife
Ambergris Caye is infamous for being an ongoing party town. With so many excited tourists visiting and leaving the town every day, every night is full of action and Belize is the party capital. The beach is bordered with bars and restaurants that are open throughout every night of the week, with weekends being at peak.
4. San Pedro Lagoon
Formerly a fishermen’s and vegetable vendors’ area, San Pedro Lagoon was also known as a popular spot for viewing manatees and crocodiles. But now with a six million dollar investment, it is shining as a major hangout enclave with dazzling board walks, a small park, water taxi terminal and a number of kiosks, souvenir shops and even a condo project which will make you long for buying a Ambergris Caye Real Estate here.
So, what do you think now? Are you ready to take up some action at Ambergris Caye instead of just lazing out?
