Cambodia – The Land of Cruel History and Lovely People
Cambodia is perhaps one of the most exciting travel destinations in the world. In the middle 1990s, after many years of isolation, the Kingdom of Cambodia has opened itself to the travelers from foreign countries and continents. Since then, the number of tourists has been gradually increasing. Primary traveling destinations in Cambodia are the beaches of Sihanoukville, the capital city of Phnom Penh and near Siem Reap there are the temples of Angkor. These destinations offer very nice accommodation, restaurants bar and tourist services. Really good guesthouse Phnom Penh can offer is possible to find, with some careful planning and research. Along with this common touristic destinations, there are places representing yet “unspoiled” Cambodia, uncommon and exotic destinations such as cities Kep, Kampot and Battambang.
The Kingdom of Cambodia is the land of contrast. This country’s more recent history is remembered to be really cruel and horrifying. In the late 1970s Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge regime committed, hard to believe keeping in mind all the things that happened in that period, some of the most terrible atrocities of the previous century. Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, Killing Fields and many more sites stand today to witness this shocking period for the kingdom of Cambodia. Contrary to this not so pleasant experience, there are friendly, happy and lovely Khmer people. Their openness, hospitality and smile are impressing for all foreign visitors. Bayon and the ancient temples of Angkor (Angkor Wat as the most famous destination) are some of the most wonderful World Heritage Sites. Keeping all of this in mind, it is clear why it is said that the kingdom of Cambodia is the kingdom of contrast, of dark and light, magnificence and tragedy. The beauty and uniqueness of this exotic country simply leaves every traveler breathless.
