Hanauma Bay, Oahu

The most popular snorkeling paradise of the island, Hanauma Bay is on the southeast end of East Honolulu and southernmost end of Oahu. Extremely family-friendly and accessible, the crystal waters of the bay are full of coral reefs and beautiful fish. This being the first Marine Life Conservation District, it is utmost important for tourists to maintain its fragile ecosystem by posing minimum impact on the environment. The lovely cove was a former volcanic crater and today flooded by wave erosion. The marine park is open every day except Tuesdays.

Kealakekua Bay, Big Island, Hawaii

Kealakekua Bay is historic and famous as a scuba diving and snorkeling spot on the western Hawaiian coast near the village of Captain Cook. It is perched 40 minutes south from Kona’s Kailua-Kona. Covered from all sides by cliffs, the waters in this bay are calm and friendly, and full of marine life. The Kona coast is famous for Manta Rays spotting. Diving is conducted here at night too with spotlights. Some resorts even arrange shows of Manta Rays attracted to the spotlights. The northern coastline of the bay is lined by a steep cliff named Pali-kapu-o-Keoua where you can watch several lava tube openings. Some of them are the burial caves of ancient times. The Napo’ opo’o area of the beach is shallow with scanty coral, but as your proceed further, things improve. The most interesting part is found between Napo’ opo’o and Manini Beach Point, where you can find numerous mysterious caves, encrusting coral, ledges and crevices at the depth of around 30 feet. You can even take a calm boat or kayak ride, especially enchanting at night, towards the seaside memorial of Captain James Cook, the British explorer of the group of islands. Here you can enjoy more snorkeling.

Honaunau Bay, Big Island

The mountainous Maunaloa shields the South Kona and so waters on the southwest of Big Island are calm. You can witness a perfect example of this clear water at the lovely Honaunau Bay which is also known as Two-steps because here is a spot on the shore where a volcanic rock has been worn away naturally in such a way as to create a neat two-step entry point for divers and snorkelers. These warm, friendly waters feature numerous fish and Honu, the famous Green Sea Turtles of Hawaii.
