Africa's Victoria LakeA vast expanse of shimmering water, birds of incredible colors, shapes and sizes resting on the shining rocks emerging from the water, or flying or diving for the rich collection of fish inside, colorful boats transporting strong and handsome people – this is none other than Lake Victoria! Lake Victoria, more popularly known as Lake Nyanza, forms a natural boundary of three African countries, viz. Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. No wonder, it is surrounded by indescribable beauty of Nature and attracts tourists from across the world! The second largest freshwater lake in the world was discovered by John Hanning Speke in 1858, in order to find out the source of the mighty River Nile which emerges from the lake and flows northward to Egypt and further in the Mediterranean.

Numerous hotels, lodges and resorts are present ashore and on the islands of the lake to entertain tourists. There are also many local companies offering a guide to take you around the lake area and enjoy the Nature and wildlife, living harmoniously with humans.

There are 84 islands in Lake Victoria, many of which are uninhabited. These islands make an excellent retreat for birds. Fishing and birding are important activities on the lake.

Fishing

Nile Perch is an important game fish in Lake Victoria. There are some environmental issues regarding the fish species, because since when it has been introduced in the lake, the native species have declined considerably. Still anglers are mainly after Nile Perch and Tilapia at Lake Victoria. Fishing expeditions are conducted by various lodges and hotels around the lake.
