Miles and miles of open land, blue skies, and the horizon making you curious about what next, what next! This country is none other than Mongolia – one of a few countries in the world where the nomad tradition is still alive! Located between Russia and China, Mongolia is a landlocked country having the least population density in the world.
What to See and Do?
First of all, don’t expect a luxury travel here, as Mongolian means of transportation are not very good. You are going to have to spend much time in vehicles, if you plan to see many provinces in a limited time. Still, there are some places you must see.
The first must-visit place in Mongolia is the Hovsgol Lake in Hovsgol Province – an extremely beautiful lake.
Though there are not many monuments in Mongolia, the Amarbaysgalant monastery is a must-see. This is in Selenge Province.
Erdenent’s open copper mine in Orhon Province is Asia’s biggest copper mine.
Amongst activities, you can enjoy canoeing in some of Mongolia’s most prominent rivers.
If you are an adventurous animal, visiting the reindeer herders in Tsagaannuup, Khovsgol, in high Alpine mountains and riding a reindeer or horse may be things you would like. But remember that it’s a long and difficult ride.
The area near Lake Khovsgol is perfect for camping with the beautiful Bonda Lake, hiking, fishing, horse riding, visiting reindeer herders and Darhad Valley. This is an extremely scenic area, on an altitude of 1645 meters, covered with lush pine forests and meadows dotted with grazing horses and yaks, and rich wildlife. You can see as many as 430 species of birds. You may also get a chance to meet the people of one of the 5 Mongolian tribes that live here. The camp has good amenities like hot shower, sauna, a restaurant and internet. So, here you can experience a slice of luxury travel to Mongolia.

Culture
Mongolia is home to wrestling, archery and horse-riding, and all these can be seen at their best during the Naadam Festival. Nadaam is the National Holiday of the country celebrated from 11th to 13th July mainly in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, and on a smaller scale throughout the country in different aimags (provinces).
Other major festivals are the Golden Eagle Festival – the largest festival of eagle hunters in the world (whose golden eagles hunt for them) – on 1st weekend of October and Nauryz Festival on 22nd March when there is a traditional parade, concert and horse races for several days.
When to Visit?
If you plan to visit Mongolia, you will have to take different scenarios into consideration.
Ideally the tourist season starts in May and reaches its peak in July when Nadaam holidays start. August is the month of the most favorable atmosphere with plenty of chance to observe the culture closely, but not if you want peace and silence. In September and October, temperatures are still on a warmer side, but a bit cold during nights. Autumn too is not bad when you can enjoy culture and sight-seeing, but for traveling from November to the Lunar New Year, you should have the ability to bear the cold weather and fermented mare’s milk.
If you are interested in the nomad culture, you should visit Mongolia during the Lunar New Year celebration time which is called Tsagaan Sar.
So, if you want to go on a totally different vacation this time, choose Mongolia – one of the most exclusive and exquisite countries in the world.
