The beautiful Puerto Rico is a wonder island where there is a warm tropical climate, great beaches, multicolored coral reefs, misty central mountains housing limestone caves and a unique array of forests – some of the driest and the wettest in the Caribbean! The self-governing commonwealth of the USA is located in the Caribbean Sea on the east of the Dominican Republic and on the west of the US Virgin Islands. The island welcomed Christopher Columbus in 1493 and went under Spanish rule for more than four centuries. It became a US territory as per the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Spanish-American War. Spanish and English are major languages here, with Spanish as the primary one.

Puerto Rico has hoards of attractions one of which is the Bioluminescent Bays near the city of Fajardo and in the island of Vieques and is a must-visit for the glowing microscopic organisms which emit rays, which are seen as darts moving swiftly. Take a kayak or a boat and venture into a bay on a new moon and you will get an unforgettable experience. The bay at Lajas is the most famous and has many kiosks and restaurants.

One more attraction you cannot afford to miss is El Yunque – the rainforest of Puerto Rico, spread out over a mountain and home to the threatened Puerto Rico parrot and the chirping Coqui tree frog. The forest has numerous hiking trails. Yokahu Tower serves you the best for taking a panorama of the forest. Two of the trails lead you to the breathtaking La Mina waterfalls, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the pool at the bottom of the waterfalls. Rains can arrive in the forest anytime, so be prepared.

Puerto Rico has more than 15 golf courses, just at a short drive from the San Juan metro area.

A nice thing about this heavenly island is there are many family-owned travel companies that offer guided tours to the Central Mountains in Utuado close to Rio Tanama, kayaking tours to Lake Guajataka, repelling in Arecibo and horse riding on the Aguadilla Beach. So, you can enjoy these tours very comfortably and conveniently. Some of the operators even provide low-cost or even free accommodation.

Once in Puerto Rico, you cannot miss snorkeling and scuba diving. The coasts of the island, particularly that off Fajardo is wonderful for enjoying a dive.

In the olden days, Puerto Rico was a major exporter of coffee, tobacco and sugarcane. You can still see some coffee plantations, either operational or turned into museums. Most of them are located in the mountains just north of Ponce.

Caja de Muertos is an uninhabited island, famous for its turtle traffic and can be accessed by a ferry or through one of the diving tour operators.

And one more must-visit place is Rio Camuy Caverns. A 45-minute guided walking tour takes you to the main cave, Cueva Clara, which includes a view of world’s third largest underground river and a gigantic sinkhole.
