Famous not only for being the second largest island in the Mediterranean but also for some of the whitest beaches and clearest waters, Sardinia is perfect for those looking for coastal drives, dreamy seclusion with rocky cliffs and coves, silky smooth bays and enjoyment of walking across dunes. Whatever your idea about a fun holiday is, Sardinia has it!
Cagliari
The largest Sardinian city and one of the most wonderful Sardinia escapes, Cagliari stands ashore a wide gulf with its historic center stretched from seaside Via Roma up to the Castello quarter on the hilltop. With masonry palazzi, baroque churches, magnificent beaches and topnotch restaurants, Cagliari is perfect to explore the southern Sardinian coast.
Pula
Pula is a major coastal town on the west of Cagliari and has a lot of unique and authentic boutiques and alfresco restaurants. Live concerts are arranged here on summer nights in the Piazza del Popolo.
Villasimius
East of Cagliari is the colourful village of Villasimius which is the center of summertime activity. From here, the wide Via Umberto I offers way to beaches, a marina and resorts, all located in the front of a protected marine reserve.
Costa Rei
This is a small, seaside town, largely residential with private villas clinging to the hills and having only a few hotels and restaurants that distract from the action on the beach.
Nuraghi
Found only in Sardinia, nuraghi are ancient stone structures erected for the island’s defense. They are mysterious and striking and have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites’ list.
Chia
Watch some of the best Sardinian beaches in Chia. Don’t miss its curved arcs of fine golden sand bordering turquoise lagoons which are adorned by pink flamingos in early summer.

Enjoy Incredible Beaches
Without leaving Europe, you can enjoy some of the most incredibly beautiful beaches in Sardinia. Sardinian beaches are famous for the combination of white sands and extremely blue waters. At Cosa Smeralda you can find supermodels and film stars frolicking in the waters, and sheer cliffs at the coves of Golfo di Orosei. Or you can sail to the smooth bays of La Maddalena, walk barefoot across the wave-lashed Costa Verde dunes or lounge on the silky beaches of Costa del Sud.
Adventures
Sardinia is one of the best destinations for adventures. There are the quaint ruins of Tiscali to offer you lush, peaceful interior to hike through, Cala Luna offering you crescent-shaped bay where you can walk on the dizzying coastal path in the company of climber-clad limestone cliffs, and Gola Su Gorropu where you can wander through holm oak forests to reach the powerful boulder-strewn canyon.
The north coast offers excellent opportunities to windsurfers while Cagliari’s coast offers fierce shipwrecks to divers. Above that, there are Nora’s submerged ruins and the underwater Nereo Cave.
Architecture
In Sardinia, you can get a chance to watch some of the outstanding architectures of historic times. Visit Palazzo Vicaregio to watch its decorative interiors adorned with frescoed ceilings, gilded mirrors and damask-covered walls. Next must-visit is the Cittadella dei Musei (Piazza Arsenale) to view the Pinacoteca gallery and National Archaeological Museum displaying the pre-Roman nuraghic civilization’s artifacts.
Culture
Sardinia has an eventful history which is shown by its numerous ruined castles and ancient churches spread across its serene medieval villages. However, although conquerors like Romans, Pisans, Phoenicians, Piemontese, Catalans, Carthaginians and many more, from all directions, have left their traces, none of them could leave a dominant impact and the Sardinian culture has flourished proudly.
Churches
Visiting the limestone baroque churches around the historic center is sheer pleasure. One of the remarkable churches is Sant’Anna which has an especially beautiful and newly revamped façade. Also don’t miss venturing beneath the cathedrals of Sant’Efisio and Santa Restituta to the early cave-like Christian chapels.
These are only a few attractions in Sardinia. The fact is that this island has much more to offer to its visitors. Visit Sardinia Escapes to know more. So, if you are looking for something unique for your next vacation, choose Sardinia.
